(Salt Lake City, Utah) - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has confirmed that two of its missionaries serving in Romania have died of apparent asphyxiation due to a natural gas leak in their apartment.

Elder McKay Choy Burrows, 20, of Highland, Utah and Elder Jace Edwards Davis, 20, of Logandale, Nevada died sometime Friday night, according to Scott Trotter, spokesman for the church.

"We extend our love and sympathy to the elders' families and friends," Trotter said. "We pray that the Spirit of the Lord will bring them peace and comfort at this difficult time."

The missionaries were serving in the Romania Bucharest Mission. Burrows had been in Romania since August. Church leaders reorganized the Austria Vienna East Mission to include Romania in 1990. The Romania Bucharest Mission was organized July 1, 1993.
