Over 20 thousand Utahns have unclaimed property with the state of Utah.
The state treasurers office sent out this publication in April trying to find the owners of inactive checking accounts, unclaimed life insurance policies, and whatever else of value anyone's ever left behind in any old bank account.
After an account is inactive for three years and a financial institution has done whatever they can to try to find the owner, they send the property or funds to the treasurers office where it will sit indefinitely until the rightful owner comes to claim it.
