Tularemia in Iron County

Tularemia in Iron County

By Rachelle Killpack

The Utah Public Health Laboratory has confirmed a case of Tularemia in an Iron Country resident. They are saying the person is exposed in a rural area several miles southwest of Cedar city.

Tularemia is a bacterial disease that is usually spread by tick and deer fly bites. It can also be spread by mosquitoes and direct contact
with an infected animal, which often include wild rabbits and domestic cats that have been exposed. Symptoms include fever, headache, swollen lymph nodes, and skin ulcer
at the wound site. Tularemia is a treatable infection with the correct antibiotics.
