As Southern Utah families wrap up summer vacations and kids head back to school health officials are warning that West Nile virus-carrying mosquitoes are still out there.
Only eight human West Nile virus cases have been reported so far in 2008 but this is the time of year officials see a spike in reported infections.
They say people are more aware of west nile in months like July when they are picnicking and seeing mosquitoes everywhere but when kids go back to school people tend to let down their guard and stop wearing repellent.
Last year 11 human cases had been reported by the end of August but by mid-October The number jumped to 70. You can reduce your risk of becoming infected by wearing insect repellent and protective clothing from dusk until dawn.
