St George Takes Away Christmas Bonuses For All City Employees

By Chance Walser

It seems like everyone is feeling the pressure to scale back operations to stay afloat and St. George city government is no exception.
The assistant to the city manager Marc Mortenson says at the begining of the budget year the city decided to cut back every department about 10 percent.
That decision was based on projections that sales and property tax revenues would be lower than in previous years.
Now, it looks as though things will be worse than anticipated and operations will be streched even thinner with the city making an additional 5 to 10 percent cut for all departments.
Mortenson says they will not lay anyone off just yet, but they are not filling positions that become vacant and it could be like that for another year, maybe even two.
