The senior from Richfield qualified for the championship tourney last week at the NCAA D II West/Central Super Regional and started his opening round play by scoring two birdies, a bogey and a triple bogey in Tuesday’s action at the 7,092 yard par-72 course.
Chappell fired even par thru the first seven holes by birdying the par-three 8th hole, and the par-five 9th to move him to 2-under par on the front nine. He then gave back some strokes on the back nine. The par-four holes on 14 (triple bogey) and 15 (bogey) proved challenging as Chappell moved back to 2-over par 74.
The leader in the clubhouse after round one is Josh Creel of Central Oklahoma who carded a seven-under 65 today and leads by three strokes. He helped his team (279) move to the front of the pack and they lead UNC Pembroke (285) by six strokes. Western Washington (287) is in third, Chico State (289) is tied for fourth with Georgia State College (289).
Chappell is the first Dixie State College golfer to qualify for the NCAA Division II Golf Championships.
Round two play will resume Wednesday morning while Chappell tees off at 8AM MST. Live stats of the tournament are available at NCAA.com.
