(St. George, UT) – For the first 72 minutes on Tuesday’s match at Hansen Stadium, the Dixie State College women’s soccer team played with a ferocious intensity not seen in a few Pacific West Conference matches.

With conference rival Grand Canyon across the field, the Red Storm looked poised to curtail a recent losing skid and hand the Lopes only their second league loss.

But two late goals pushed the visitors from the Valley of the Sun to their fifth straight victory, 2-1 over Dixie State.

The Red Storm (6-6-2, 6-4 PWC) dropped their third straight match, the longest skid of the 2012 season.

Jennifer Mason broke a two-match scoring drought with a header to begin the 20th minute, assisted by Aarika Andersen.

Dixie State was unable to capitalize on their 21-18 shot advantage, including a prime chance in the second half when Andersen hit the post and a putback from Megan Marchbanks was corralled by GCU’s Cat Lena.

Rakeisha Sealey had the equalizer in the 73rd minute by looping a ball over the head of Abby Johnson. GCU took the lead in the 86th minute off a deflection. Emily Ravenhill lined a low shot to the left corner for the game-winner.

Lena faced 15 shots, stopping 14 for the win in net. Johnson had eight stops for DSC.

Dixie State travels to Phoenix for a rematch with Grand Canyon on Saturday at 9 p.m. Mountain.
