(St. George, UT) – The first day action of the three-day Dixie Great 8 tournament played at Burns Arena proved to be not so great for local teams. Of the five games played only one Region 9 team, (Hurricane), went away victorious.

It was as if the local kids did not adapt well to the larger environment inside the arena as proven by the low field goal shooting.

The slate began with the Lehi Pioneers winning over the Dixie Flyers 68-46. Lehi went ahead 11-3 in the first quarter and a good shooting second quarter helped create the ultimate distance that Dixie could not overcome the rest of the way. The Pioneers hit 7 of 12 field goals in the second quarter and senior center Colton Colledge did most of the damage to the injury depleted Flyers. Colledge scored nine points in the quarter on four field goals in the paint. He finished with 29 points in leading Lehi to the win. In the first half, the Pioneers stroked 11 of 28 from the field while Dixie was only 4 of 22.

Jordan Peck added 13 points, and Blake Cleveringa had 10 for the Pioneers.

Devin Bennett led the Flyers with 11 points, Brandon Pledger scored 10 and Cole Critchfield finished with nine.

The Flyers play Bountiful Thursday at 3:30PM while Lehi faces the Hurricane Tigers Wednesday at 6:30PM.

The second game of the day saw the state’s number one ranked 3A team, Desert Hills, fall short of a furious late fourth quarter comeback in a 56-55 overtime loss to Timpview.

Both teams stared the game without a shooter’s touch. The T-Birds (4-1) held an 8-4 lead after the first quarter expired and the combined shooting was 6 of 20 (Desert Hills 2 of 10, Timpview 4 of 10). They solidified in the second quarter when Timpview scored 13 points to the Thunder’s 12 and the halftime score resulted in Timpview 21-16.

In the third quarter, the T-Birds enjoyed a double-digit lead throughout the quarter, even building a 15-point advantage at one point (37-22). Rickey Shumway had a nine point quarter and the T-Birds drained three treys—Desert Hills (7-1) only made three field goals in the quarter.

But Desert Hills awoke in the fourth quarter. With the score Timpview 43-28, and a little over five minutes remaining, the Thunder went on a 18-3 run to tie the score at 46 at the end of regulation. In a crazy two and a half minute segment of the game, Brandon Simister scored an And-1 at the 2:11 mark, and Tyler Ott followed with a trey from the wing. Then another Desert Hills steal produced another Simister And-1 make to tie the game.

Desert Hills regained their first lead since 4-2 with one of two free throws but Timpview regained footing. The teams traded clutch free throws the rest of the way and the T-Birds prevailed 56-55. It was Desert Hills first loss of the season.

Shumway led the T-Bird with 19 points and Dax Raymond added 14.

Desert Hills was led by Simister (15 points), Ott (13) and Jaden Beckstrand with 12.

Timpview plays Bountiful Wednesday at 3:30PM and Desert Hills plays Viewmont Wednesday at 8:00PM.

Other action included the Bountiful Braves topping the Snow Canyon Warriors 78-62. The Braves started seperating themselves from Snow Canyon after a close first quarter. The score was 21-18 Bountiful, when the Braves went on an 11-3 run in the first five minutes of the second quarter. At the break, it was Bountiful 41-26 and they never looked back.

Brit Harding put up 25 points for the Braves. Dain Murdock had 16 and Brandon Yates added 13 to complement Harding.

Brayden Linde led the Warriors with 17 points. Chandler Gines pitched in 14 and Ben Smith added 13.

In another overtime affair, the Salem Hills Skyhawks won its first game of the season by winning over Pine View 43-39.

A two-point difference was the case at the end of the first three quarters, with Salem Hills holding the edge 8-6 after one, 20-18 at halftime, and 29-27 after the third. In the overtime period, Skyhawks' Ryan Koller was the go-to-guy. Koller scored seven points of his team's 10 including making four pressure-packed free throws.

Koby Linford led Salem Hills with 11 points, and Ryan Stevens joined Koller with 10 apiece.

Mitch Godfrey scored 11 and Kody Wilstead added 10 for the Panthers. Godfrey also had seven rebounds.
