(St. George, UT) - Desert Hills continued to add firsts to its young wrestling program by winning its first dual win in its rivalry gainst Hurricane 40-35.

The Thunder built a 34-17 lead at one point, but the Tigers raced back to make the score 34-29 after Hurricane’s Kolby Mills (120) and Chase Moss (126) both earned second round pins.

Hurricane was going to pick up another six points on a forfeit in the 138-pound class, so only one match remained and the dual’s outcome came down to Desert Hills’ Devan Webb against Hurricane’s Dusty McLeod at 132 pounds.

Webb embraced the moment in front of a well-filled Thunder gym—his older brother let him know what hung in the balance.

“Before I headed out there, my brother said, ‘okay, you know you have to win this one,’’ Webb said. “I said allright.

McLeod didn’t mess around with his approach. He immediately got advantage on Webb and forced him to do some counter or be pinned quickly.

“I went to take him down with a single leg, from neutral, and he wizard me. . . he bounced me off, caught me off guard and he had me in a headlock. So I ran toward his legs, rolled him back over, and started to do what I’ve been knowing how to do.

“He definitely gave me a wakeup call.”

With the match tied 4-4 in the second round, Webb earned the pin with 42 seconds remaining in the round, securing the dual win for the Thunder.

“That was fun, we have never beat Hurricane in a dual before,” Thunder coach Warren Richins said. “We’re kind of excited, that means our program is going in a good direction.

“In duals this season, we are 14-1. Our only dual loss is to Cedar, and we lost to them by three points.”
