  • UPDATE: Smith Mesa Fire 100-Percent Contained; 123-acres burned

    (Virgin, UT) - An escaped camp fire fanned by high winds that burned 123-acres on Smith Mesa located above the Hurricane Cliffs just outside Zion National Park five-miles north of Virgin, Utah is 100-percent contained.

    Interagency Fire Management Area acting public information officer Mike Melton said crews have been aided by overnight cool temperatures and higher relative humidity. Fire fighters are continuing to mop up and monitor this fire. The wildfire, located on private land, is fueled by grass, brush, pinyon and juniper.

    Threats to any structures has been abated. There were no structure damaged or injuries reported.

    Fire fighting resouces deployed include: 7 engines, 3 water tenders from local state and federal agencies.
