(St. George, UT) - Dixie State College’s athletic department announced its 2011 Hall of Fame inductees Thursday afternoon, and of the four named honorees, one had a coaching run that only few people experience.

Greg Croshaw will join former women’s soccer coach Heather Mendenhall-Dahl, former basketball player Marcus Banks, and Flood Street to Fenway hometown hero Bruce Hurst in the newest DSC HOF class.

Croshaw’s football coaching career at DSC ended on a sour note February 9, 2006, when when school officials fired Croshaw. Then DSC athletic director Dexter Irvin cited an academic performance situation for the firing. The school’s transition from a junior college to a more stringent atmosphere, the NCAA Division II, meant new academic criteria were in place and the change was made.

The induction of Croshaw could be seen as putting the baby to bed; the baby being any hard feelings.

“When they called me and asked, I was pretty dang shocked and surprised, and obviously pleased,” Croshaw said.

The Hall of Fame Dinner on September 15 will certainly be a full-circle for the coach whose career spanned 24 years at the school. As Dixie’s head coach, Croshaw built a 214-56-1 record in the junior college ranks with 17 conference titles, and two national runner-up finishes.

Records aside, Croshaw built something else though, something not measurable. It was something perhaps that helped him process the sting of being let go in 2006.

“Dixie College is a big part of mine and my wife’s life,” Croshaw said. “Our whole family is connected to the college. Every one of our kids went there.

“Living in St. George and coaching at the college was the route that I and my wife decided to travel. It was such a good run for us. The community, the supporters, the friends, the lifestyle, just everything combined, it makes me kind of feel like Lou Gehrig, I kind of feel like the luckiest man in the world.”

Asked if he had ever thought of his coaching career in historical terms Croshaw said, “I guess that I had such tunnel vision, legacy never dawned on me. I just felt like I was a guy who had a job and would show up every day, keep my head down, and do the best I could.

“Of course, after 15, 20 years, things start adding up. I didn’t ever think about something like this happening.”
