(St. George, UT) – The Thunder smothered the Pirates’ offense in a commanding 24-0 victory Friday night at Desert Hills High school.

Three turnovers committed by Moapa and just an overall stingy Thunder defense helped Desert Hills win its first game of 2011.

The Thunder (1-1) allowed a minuscule 91 yards of total offense to Moapa Valley, and illustrating the dominance in the trenches by the Thunder defensive line was the two yards of rushing Desert Hills relented on 34 Pirate rushing attempts.

Peter Brown had 11 tackles, and one interception in leading the Thunder defense.

Mike Needham led the way on offense rushing for 171 yards on 13 carries and scored one touchdown. Needham also caught two passes for 40 yards, including a 37-yard touchdown.

    Boxscore:

    Moapa 0—0—0—0 < 0

    Desert Hills 7—10—7—0 < 24

    Scoring plays:

    DH Needham 4 run

    DH Alegria 41 FG

    DH Needham 37 pass Harris

    DH Rutledge 12 run
