  • Jimmie Hughes Wins St. George City Council Seat

    (St. George, UT) - Running a second time for St. George City Council proved successful for Jimmie Hughes who edged incumbent Gloria Shakespeare by 111 votes in Tuesday's general election. A formal canvas of the ballots will be held by the St. George City Council at 4:30PM Tuesday certifying the election results.

    2011 St. George Municipal Election Results

    Jon Pike led the field of candiates seeking re-election with 4998 (21.61%) of the votes cast, followed by Gil Almquist with 4307 (18.62%) while incumbent Gloria Shakespeare lost by 111 votes to Jimmie Hughes who garnered 3685 (15.93%) of the total votes cast. Shakespeare received (15.45%)or 3574 votes.

    Hughes grew up in St. George graduated from Dixie High School and attended Dixie College before serving as a representative of his church in the Porto Alegre, Brazil mission for 2-years. He currently is an independent mortgage broker, an appraiser, a partner in a small business venture capital firm and cattle rancher. Hughes currently serves as secretary/treasurer of the Washington County Farm Bureau.

    He and his wife Tawny are the parents of five children. Hughes said during his campiagn his priorities are God, Family and County. He made the following pledge if elected to the city council;

    •Spend your money wisely.

    •Make smart decisions on growth and planning.

    •Work to attract new industry and job opportunity.

    •Support our police in fighting drugs and crime.

    •Work hard the entire 4 years of the Term.
