(St. George, UT) – Hurricane and Pine View battled through a tightly contested season-ending region dual Thursday night—it came down to the last match and the Tigers prevailed 38-36.

In the heavyweight matchup, Hurricane’s Joe Takau won 8-3 over Wes Kauvaka to put the Tigers on top. Pine View had a one-point lead, 36-35 entering the match, but Takua’s victory earned the three points that Hurricane needed take the final lead.

The Tigers built a 29-12 lead after Zach Prince earned a pin (2nd) at 152 pounds. Then Pine View’s Austin Manuele got the momentum swinging the other way with his pin in a 160-pound match to make the score 29-18. Jerome Nelson won a forfeit at 170 pounds, Mikaio Schwalger (182 pounds) scored a first round pin, and Mike Kavuaka won a forfeit (2nd) when Hurricane’s Daniel Bulloch was injured and could not finish. The Panthers had a 36-29 lead at that point.

Brian Scott (220) had a 11-1 lead in his match with Jake Heaton before he secured a second round pin, making the Pine View lead a single point, 36-35.

Hurricane got some important efforts from Tyler Stout and Dusty McCleod in the win. McCleod (132) got a second round pin to put the Tigers up 17-9 at one point.

“Right off the whistle I was trying a double-leg, and he fought hard, but I finally got it,” said McCleod. “He was hard to breakdown.

“I got him in a basket cradle, he got out of that, then I put him in a regular cradle and then I pinned him.”

Hurricane coach Kerry Prince was especially pleased with the two grapplers.

“He’s been phenomenal,” Prince said. “That’s what you hope you get out of the seniors. He’s been stepping up.”

Stout earned his pin in the third round with 37 seconds on the clock putting Hurricane up 23-12.

“Tyler Stout’s coming on huge, he’s coming off winning a tournament, he knows how to wrestle,” Prince said. “He’s a tough one. He stayed in position in that match the whole time.

“I told him in practice that he’s peaking right now; he picked the right time to peak.”

Sandwiched in between Stout and McCleod’s wins was another impressive win, however, it was Pine View’s Zach Worlton. The 138-pounder won a 6-4 decision over Justin Post and earned praise from Panthers coach Brett Gifford.

“He’s been hurt for part of the season, and to wrestle the Post kid, and get a win like that, I am real proud of Zach’s effort,” Gifford said. “He’s a promising sophomore, I’m excited for him. He’s going to get better.”
