(Seaside, CA) – The No.3 seed Dixie State College softball team (39-11) continued its good play at the 2012 NCAA II West Regional with a 2-0 win over second seeded and No. 7 ranked Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex.

The Red Storm will now face No. 6 seed UC San Diego Sunday at 1PM. UCSD defeated Montana State Billings 4-0 and CSU Monterey Bay 5-0 to advance to the championship game.

Sophomore Mattie Snow (17-4) threw a complete game, shutting out an Otter team that has four batters hitting over .400. She held them to three hits and struck out five, needing just 98 pitches.

With the game scoreless thru six innings, Courtney Sherwin deposited a 1-2 pitch over the left field fence, her 12th of the season, giving the Red Storm a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Anna Cue crushed her fourth home run of the season and second of the Regional over the right field fence to give Snow a 2-0 lead.

Snow had a stretch where she retired 11 straight batters and got some stellar defense to pitch out of three separate jams.

Coach Randy Simkins said, "Mattie threw amazing today. She located very well and held a really good team to just three hits."

The first came in the first inning winning Angelina Orozco led off with a double to right center. Snow then forced a failed bunt foul out, a ground out to second base that moved Orozco to third base. The defense worked its magic when Jackie Serna lined a ball to right field and Sherwin made a diving catch to hold CSUMB at bay.

The second came in the sixth inning when Orozco reached base on Snow's only walk of the game. With Skyler Valdivia batting, coach Simkins called a pitch out and the Otters where trying to hit and run. Valdivia missed and catcher Marla Reiter threw a strike to first base to the covering Nicole Chavez who tagged Orozco out.

The final jam came in the bottom of the seventh inning when Nina Villanueva doubled to right center. Snow then induced a ground ball to short and Johnna Brown opted to cut down Villenueva who was trying to take third on the play instead of throwing out Serna at first. Snow then struck out Jamie Moon and induced a fielder’s choice to end the game.

"We practice those kind of plays and you never know when you how much you are going to use them, but I tell them all the time it’s what will make the difference in a game," said Simkins.

For the Red Storm, Sheila Gelter led the team with two hits and Brown extended her hitting streak to 23 games with a double in the first inning. Jaelle Judkins added the other Red Storm hit in the third inning.
