The annual year-end awards program recognizes students, faculty and staff who have excelled in various areas of achievement throughout the academic year. The Dixie Awards, formerly known as the Rebel Awards, have been a tradition at Dixie State College since the 1960s.
This year’s awards presentation recognized five finalists and the overall winners in over 25 award categories, ranging from academic excellence, campus spirit and service to the campus and community.
Sixteen students were presented “Student of the Year” awards in a number of academic emphases. The winners included Tara Tichenor in music/music education; Rachel Robins with two awards in English/English education and secondary education; Kaylee Litson in psychology; Bracken Blake in theatre; Michael Hinton in criminal justice; Brett Dyer in nursing; Kelsee Foisy in dental hygiene; Marikrista Raya in computer & information technology; Nathaniel Dockstader in biology/biology education; Hannah Lewis in mathematics/mathematics education; Kris Smail in integrated studies; Amber Every in elementary education; Josh Kleiner in accounting; Rebecca McCullough in business; Ryan Cowley in finance; and Justin McArthur in communication.
Other student award winners included Bethany Austin with the “Heart of Dixie” award; Jordan Bracken was presented with the “Dixie Spirit” award; KateLyn Wall won the “Entertainer of the Year” award; and Ezra Irvin was given the “Outstanding Student Involvement” award. In addition, Ryan Mayfield was named DSC “Outstanding Male Student,” while Kelli Charlton was tabbed as the “Outstanding Female Student.”
DSC women’s cross country athlete Rachel Young was named DSC “Female Student-Athlete of the Year,” while baseball player Joe Andrade took home “Male Student-Athlete of the Year” honors. DSC’s “Take Back the Night” student club won the “Student Organization of the Year” award, and the club’s advisor, DSC history assistant professor Dr. Joel Lewis, was named the “Club Advisor of the Year.”
DSC Business Department professor Dr. Kevin Barrett was named “Teacher of the Year,” while DSC faculty member and Raging Red advisor Merrilee Webb was presented with the second-annual “Teacher of the Year – Rising Star” award, which was created to honor faculty who have served at Dixie State for three years or less. In addition, Corey Reeves was awarded with the “Distinguished Staff Member” honor.
In addition, former DSC dean Dr. George O. Rampton was presented with the Distinguished Service Award for his educational and fundraising efforts during his tenure at the college. As the Assistant to the President under former President Dr. Douglas Alder, Rampton secured his place in Dixie history by raising private funds and federal grants in excess of $50 million. Those efforts led to the construction of the Dixie’s history tile mural on the south wall of the Graff Arts Building; the Tanner Fountain in the heart of Dixie’s campus; Hansen Stadium; the Browning Learning Center and Browning Library addition, the Eccles Fitness Center; and the Bell Tennis Courts; along with campus art and ADA improvements.
The ceremony also featured the formal introductions of the 2012 DSC Baccalaureate Valedictorians and Associate degree high honors graduates. Jordan Rich, a business administration major from Hurricane, and Bonnie Lish, a sophomore accounting major from Mantua, Utah, were honored as this year’s 101st Commencement Valedictorian and associate degree student speakers, respectively.
The ceremony also saw the introduction and swearing of the DSCSA student officers for the upcoming 2011-12 academic year. Brody Mikesell, a senior integrated studies major from Henefer, Utah, took the oath of office to become the new DSCSA student body president, while Brandon Price, a senior integrated studies major from Brigham City, Utah, will serve as vice president of academics, and Greg Noel, a junior psychology major from Las Vegas, Nev., will serve as vice president of student clubs.
