At the Cardinal Club Golf Course, the Dixie State College senior showed his grit by trimming seven strokes from his first day score of 74. Chappell (141) moved his place among the 108 competitors from 47th to eighth after the second round was finished on Wednesday evening.
The stroke play portion of the tournament concludes Thursday, with the individual champion determined after 54 holes and the top eight teams then advancing to match play that will be contested Friday and Saturday.
Chappell tallied five birdies on the 10th, 13th, 14th, 17th and 18th holes in his first nine holes of play to establish his great start. He did bogey the 12th which was his only blemish on his front nine and finished with a 4-under 32.
On the back nine, a bogey at the 2nd moved him to 3-under, but he was strong down the stretch by adding birdies at the 8th and 9th holes. His one-under 35 helped card the five-under 67 round. Chappell’s Wednesday round was the second best score of the day and the third best of the tournament among the 108 players.
Eric Frazetta of Chico State fired a nine-under 63, 10 strokes better than his round one score as he moved into the lead by one stroke. He helped Chico State (566), move to the front of the pack and they lead Central Oklahoma (569) by three strokes. CSU Stanlislaus (573) is third; Nova Southeastern (575) is fourth and Georgia State College and Barry (577) are tied for 5th place.
