This year’s theme is - ‘Americans: Ambassadors of Democracy’. The guest speaker will be Dr. James H. McDonald, Professor of Anthropology and Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Southern Utah University. Dr. McDonald is an applied cultural anthropologist with over 25 years of research experience analyzing rural development, political culture, and security dynamics in Mexico and Guatemala. Dr. McDonald has published over 30 articles and authored "The Applied Anthropology Reader" and served as senior editor of the American Anthropological Association Journal, Culture & Agriculture, from 1998-2007.
Dr. McDonald will speak on "Being American in an Age of Globalization." Dr. McDonald will make the case from his hands-on field experience in Guatemala that a highly diverse and complex world can only be understood through direct engagement, the will to understand multiple perspectives, and the willingness to learn from them. Only then can we, as Americans, effectively collaborate toward positive change in the global community with whom we co-exist interdependently. The musical highlight of the evening will feature the Cedar Area Inter-Faith Alliance choir under the direction of Adrianne Tawa and accompanied by Clarissa Stocks. Music will include; ‘God Bless America’ by Irving Berlin; ‘America the Beautiful’ Arranged by Mack Wilberg; ‘Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing’ – Arranged by Mack Wilberg, Feel Good’ by L. Craig Tyson and Leonard Scott; ‘What A Wonderful World’ by David Weiss and Bob Thiele and ‘Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor’ by Irving Berlin and Emma Lazarus.
Tawa said, “We have many blessings in our country and following the National Day of Prayer breakfast we were impressed by the efforts of individuals who make significant contributions helping establish freedom and democracy in other countries." On his death bed Thomas Jefferson wrote, “I shall not die without a hope that life and liberty are on steady advance. The flames kindled on the 4th of July, 1776 have spread over to much of the globe to be extinguished. We celebrate our own freedom and greatness but that is not enough. We must reach out."
The Cedar Area Inter-Faith Alliance choir consists of volunteers from area churches. Choir Committee members include: Adrianne Tawa, Alan Hoppes, Sister Yvonne Hatt and Kent Myers. Anyone wishing to join the choir should attend upcoming rehearsals that will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church from 7:00-9:00PM on Sunday, June 24th; Thursday, June 28th and Sunday, July 1st.
The Cedar Area Inter-Faith Alliance is a volunteer coalition of members from St. Judes Episcopal Church, Christ the King Catholic Church, Westview Christian Center, Trinity Lutheran of Parowan, United Methodist Church, Community Presbyterian Church, Congregation Shir Bamidbar and many wards of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The Cedar Area Inter-Faith Alliance may be best known for the 'Joy of Cooking' cookbook containing over 600 recipes including appetizers, beverages, soups and salads, side dishes, main dishes, breads, desserts, and some just for fun. The money raised from the cookbook is given to the Care-N-Share Homeless Shelter building fund.
