(Washington City, UT) - Washington City Police public information officer Ed Kantor has identified the individual involved in a shooting incident with Washington City Police officers as Jamon Val Cranney, 36 of Washington City, Utah, hospitalized in critical condition.

Kantor said the Washington County Attorneys Office Critical Incident Investigation Team is conducting an investigation into the Friday afternoon, July 20, 2012, shooting incident which took place about 3:20 PM in the Washington Fields area.

A Washington City Police officer attempted to stop the suspect for a traffic violation. Cranney fled south on Washington Fields Road. The officer chose not to pursue the vehicle through a residential area and asked police dispatch to issue an “ATL” (attempt to locate) for the driver and vehicle.

The suspect vehicle was spotted a short time later by Washington City officers patrolling near 3650 South Washington Fields Road and attempted to stop the driver. Cranney is alleged to have fired upon police near the intersection of 3650 South and KD-Jo Lane took off on foot. Police returned fire wounding the suspect. He was treated at the scene by emergency medical technicians and life flighted to the Dixie Regional Medical Center. No other injuries were reported.

Kantor said any further information would come from the Washington County Attorneys Office. He did not release the names of the officers involved or indicate whether those involved were placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
