“OSU is proud to sponsor a tribute to America on this most perfidious day in most of our lifetimes,” stated Orchestra President Harold Shirley. “While some may call it flag waving, as the lyrics of an old Perry Como song says, ‘If this is flag waving, do you know of a better flag to wave?’”
Master Singers honor our country and military with a selection of patriotic compositions, including “God Bless America.” The Master Singers are directed by Keith Bradshaw and accompanied by Gerald Rheault.
Color Country Winds is on hand to celebrate our nation with American music classics. These pieces include ”Bicycle Built for Two,” “When the Saints Go Marching In,” “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad,” “Grand Old Flag/Yankee Doodle Dandy” medley, “Little Brown Jug,” “Shenandoah,” and “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean.” Selections were arranged by John Wasson of the Dallas Band. Vocal trio Christine Reed, Susy Benson and Megan McKibben join the celebration with their rendition of "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" by Don Raye & Hughie Prince. They are accompanied by pianist Bev Sawyer.
Violinist Heather Burton and Heather Grafelman, Violist Allen Butt and cellist John Figueiredo perform the touching medley “Sweet Land of Liberty” arranged by Robert S. Frost.
Liahona Axelson plays the Revolutionary War favorite “Yankee Doodle, Theme and Variations” by Jean-Baptiste Arban.
Accidental 5 Brass Quintet will add “The Gladiator March” and “Semper Fidelis” by John Philip Sousa, as well as “America, the Beautiful” by Samuel A. Ward. Trumpets are Robert Carnesecca and Brady Ramsey, with Debbie Nollan on French Horn, Sabrina Green on trombone and Tyician Knight on tuba.
“We’re also pleased to have Boy Scout Troop 333 present the colors as part of this patriotic recital,” said Sara Penny, recital director. “We appreciate these young men taking time to honor our country.” Troop 333 is from the Cedar Breaks District, a part of the Utah National Parks Council.
The Orchestra of Southern Utah Fall Recital Patriotic Tribute is held at the St. Jude’s Episcopal Church (70 North 200 West) in Cedar City. The recital begins at 7:30pm. There is a suggested $5 donation for adults and $3 for students. Children over the age of six are welcome at all the recitals with adult supervision. OSU requests that babies and children less than six years old not attend as recitals are recorded.
The OSU Recital Series also includes Folk Music on September 18, Romantic Era on September 25, and Finale Favorites on October 2.
