Fredonia, AZ – In cooperation with the Kaibab Band of Paiute Indians, Pipe Spring National Monument will be celebrating National Native American Heritage Month during November. This is a time to celebrate and recognize tribal culture and learn about the heritage, history, art, and traditions of American Indians. Programs for the first 2 weeks of November include:

November 2 & 3, 9:00–11:30 am and 12:30-2:00 pm AZ time

Intercultural Trade: Meet with ranger David to learn about items that were traded between Southern Paiutes, Mormon pioneers and other cultures of the region.

November 2, 3 & 17, 2:00-3:00 pm &

November 8 & 16, 10:00-11:30 am

Kahns and Castles: Join volunteer Margaret on a walk to compare and contrast shelters built by Paiutes and pioneers. The different architectural styles show different uses of natural resources and shelters that meet the needs of people living very different lifestyles.

November 6, 9:30-11:30 am & November 15, 1:00-3:00 pm

Mu’uputs Canyon Hike: The hike into Mu’uputs Canyon on the Kaibab Indian Reservation, an easy 2 mile round trip, focuses on the history and lifeways of the Kaibab Paiute Indians and ends at two fascinating petroglyph sites. The hikes are limited to 20 visitors; call Pipe Spring National Monument to make a reservation (928-643-7105). There is a $10 per person tribal fee for this hike.

November 12 & 15, 10:00-11:30 am

Crafts of the Kai’va’veets: Join ranger Benn to discover how handmade, practical items provide a spiritual connection to the Earth for Native Americans.

November 9, 15 & 17, 10:00 am-noon

Archeology without the Dirt: New Techniques and Technologies: Join archeologists and researchers as they discuss and use modern, non-invasive or destructive techniques to investigate buried cultural /archeological deposits and document cultural resources.

November 17 - 3D and infrared scanning

Weaving Demonstration: Learn the basics of basket weaving from ranger Brittanni. Basket making kits will be available for sale from the Pipe Spring bookstore/giftshop.

November 13, 10:00-11:30 am

Native Beading: Join ranger Brittanni to learn about native beading using a loom.

The Pipe Spring – Kaibab Band of Paiute Indians museum also continues to feature “Weaving a Legacy” – a special exhibit that highlights the variety of Native American weaving tools, materials and products used through time. Made possible with museum collections from Pipe Spring National Monument, Zion National Park, Grand Canyon Parashant National Monument, the Bureau of Land Management, the Southern Utah University Archaeology Repository, the Kaibab Band of Paiute Indians and individual tribal members, this exhibit allows us to look into weaving’s past and present. “Weaving a Legacy” will be available for viewing through November 2012.
