“We are thrilled to be back and to get the 2010 season started,” stated 10th-year head coach Brian Stock. “I am very pleased with the first day. Everybody came back in great shape and has shown some very good and improved technical skills early on.”
Southern Utah returns 16 players from last year’s team that scored the fifth-most goals (18) and produced the third-most shots (282) in school history. All-Summit League second-team selection junior Riley Bassett returns after setting school single-season records in shots (59) and shots-on-goal (31) while also recording two goals and dishing out four assists, the second most assists in SUU single-season history. The Thunderbirds also return senior Erin Wright (formally Marble), who tied for the team-lead with three goals last season, while junior Michelle Judd also returns after registering a pair of goals in 2009.
“We are all coming back ready to work and move on from last season,” commented Wright. “This group played very well together in the spring and we are all really excited about the season.”
“We have really come together as a team after developing some great chemistry during the spring season,” added fellow senior Allison Thompson. “We are really excited to be back and to be out on the field working towards building some good momentum heading into the season.”
SUU will host UNLV for an exhibition match Saturday, August 14 at the Thunderbird Soccer Field beginning at noon. The Thunderbirds open the regular season hosting Embry-Riddle University (AZ) August 25 at 4:00pm.
“We have a great group of returners that have set the tone early on by coming back in great shape and providing great leadership for our very talented group of newcomers,” commented Stock. “We are further along than we have been in years past and that has us very excited for this season.”
