(Mesquite, NV) - The Mesquite Police Department reminds residents and visitors that schools open Monday, August 30th. Motorists are asked to obey posted speed limits, especially in school zones, and to watch out for school children.

Police Chief Douglas Law said "school zones are clearly marked with signs (some have blinking yellow lights), and they include posted speed limits at certain times of the day or when children are present. School crossing guards are in the school zones from 7:45AM to 9:00AM and 3:00PM to 4:15PM. The crossing guards wear reflective vests and carry hand held stop signs," he said.

"Mesquite police officers will be enforcing the traffic laws at school zones. Motorists are cautioned to pay attention to their speed within a school zone at posted hours plus watch for buses picking up and dropping off students," Law said. “Our goal is to ensure the safety of children going to and from school as well as those getting on and off of school buses. Drivers are required to yield the right of way to children within the crosswalk," he said.

NRS 484.3667 permits Municipal Courts to double the fine for school zone speed violations.
