(St. George, UT) - The Dixie Drive Interchange project is constructing a new Single Point Urban Interchange on I-15 between milepost 5 and 6 in St. George, Utah. The new configuration will re-align Dixie Drive along the north side of the Southgate Golf Course and provide improved access to south St. George, relieve traffic congestion in the area and meet the projected traffic demand.

*The Confluence Trailhead Park will be closed in the next few days. All recreation activity will be moved to the new parking lot and trail access East of the current park. The trail will remain open and useable from the new entrance.

*Recreationists should be aware of periodic construction activity in and around trail areas and take appropriate action to ensure their safety.

Do not cross fenced or off-limit areas at any time!

*The Virgin River Trail is open.

*The Hilton Drive Trail is closed to all activities.

*On mainline I-15 shafts continue to be drilled into the bedrock and will be filled with rebar cages and concrete to build a new southbound bridge over the Santa Clara River

*I-15 traffic has been shifted to the outside lanes in both directions.

*Cross-over lanes are being constructed to facilitate moving all traffic to the southbound lanes of I-15 in the future creating a more efficient and safe work area.

*Finish grading and excavation activities continue on the re-designed Southgate Golf Course. The new landscaping is filling in well and the course will open in October 2010. To see the new configuration of the Southgate Golf Course go to Dixie Drive Interchange map.

*The back-nine, driving range and practice facilities remain open.

*Concrete barriers are installed in the I-15 construction zone.

*Speed limit in the construction area is 55 mph.

Fines double in the construction zone.

Motorists are urged to obey the posted speed limit.

The Mall Drive Bridge linking St George to Washington Fields is a project that is shovel-ready but lacks funds despite the fact that the City of Washington has already widened 300 East, the Bridge at 300 East and Industrial, is building a new park adjacent to the new 300 East Bridge and is widening Telegraph Street in Washington. Granted, these project may involve different municipalities. But it seems to me the cities of St George and Washington could have cooperated and seen that the need to construct the Mall Drive Bridge first as far more pressing than some of the other projects going on or recently completed in Washington. It makes some people wonder if the people making these decisions are either short-sighted, ignorant or just don't care about the pressing need to build the Mall Drive Bridge. Building it first over other infrastructure projects seems to be a no-brainer.
