A felony warrant for first-degree murder was issued Friday for Scott Curley, 23, of Fredonia, Arizona, in the ambush slaying of Kane County Deputy Sheriff Brian Harris Thursday afternoon. The suspect used a stolen high-powered scoped rifle during a foot chase to gun down Harris and fire on other Kane County officers pursuing him in the desert 3-miles east of Fredonia.
K9 Teams and SWAT Teams are being used in the search effort along with air support from the Utah and Arizona Departments of Public Safety. Reported sightings of the suspect have not been confirmed as authorities continue their intense and laborious search of the area where Curley is thought to be located.
Local residents who know Curley say he is very familiar with area and could have easily slipped through the perimeter established by law enforcement. It's ironic that the biggest manhunt in southern Utah history is taking place at the same time the community is celebrating western gunfighters and movies of the old west filmed in Kane County. Many residents are uneasy and concerned about their community thought to be immune from events that have occurred and the media attention the community is receiving because of the incident, he said.
This biggest retail weekend of the year began Thursday in Kanab with the 12th Annual Western Legends Round-up celebration with parades, movie stars and family fun commemorating the days of the old west and movies filmed in Kane County.
